Hi,

I'm trying to learn Taiwanese and thought translating your poem would be a good exercise. Here it is.

Four Seconds Later
by Li Qin’an

Each time I walk to the intersection
Though the traffic signal dares say “okay”
I tell myself to “slow down”

I stand there for a second
Wait for my childish self
To dash out
And die after but a few steps

Still I stand and wait for two seconds
Wait for my youthful self
To dash out
And die halfway across

Still I stand and wait for three seconds
Wait for my middle-aged self
To step out with firm steps
And die before reaching the road’s other side

After waiting four seconds
I step out slowly with careful steps
Slowly walk past my childish corpse
Slowly walk past my youthful corpse
Slowly walk past my middle-aged corpse
Slowly trudging out
My lackluster life

This is quite wonderful to see your translation of Taiwanese poetry, you actually did it good enough, I also hope this is a good beginning; I only like to give a small comment that Lee's 好膽 herewith in second line implied a certain mode of challenge and somewhat personalized by the poet, Taiwanese language got its unique state, is different from Mandarin's, and we do hope you like to read and enjoy Taiwanese too. All best!
